How to Read Your EPUB
Your Grison Press ebook works on most phones, tablets, e-readers, and computers. Choose your device below for step-by-step instructions. You don't need to purchase a special device or subscribe to Kindle Unlimited to read an EPUB.
Before you begin
Download the .epub file from your Grison Press email or reader page. Save it somewhere you can find, such as Downloads. If you're reading a personalized advance copy, keep the file and download link private.
Amazon
Kindle e-reader or Kindle app
Recommended method: Amazon Send to Kindle. Kindle doesn't normally open an EPUB by tapping the downloaded file; Send to Kindle converts and delivers it to your Kindle library.
- Download the EPUB file to your phone, tablet, or computer.
- Open Amazon Send to Kindle and sign in with the Amazon account associated with your Kindle.
- Choose the EPUB file and upload it. Enable Add to your library if that option appears.
- Open your Kindle or Kindle app, connect to the internet, and sync or refresh your library.
- Find the book in your library (sometimes listed as a personal document), download it, and begin reading.
On supported phones, the Kindle app can also accept files from your device's Share menu. The web uploader is usually the simplest option if you're unsure.
Official instructions: Amazon Send to Kindle.
Apple mobile
iPhone or iPad
Recommended app: Apple Books (free).
- Download the EPUB using Safari or from the email link.
- Open the Files app and find the EPUB in Downloads or the folder where you saved it.
- Tap the EPUB. If it doesn't open in Books, touch and hold the file, choose Share, and select Books.
- Open Books → Library and tap the cover to read.
Want to use Kindle instead? Follow the Send to Kindle instructions above. Apple Books lets you adjust text size and other reading settings.
Android mobile
Android phone or tablet
Recommended app: Google Play Books (free).
- Install or open Google Play Books and sign in.
- Download your EPUB, then open your device's Files or Downloads app.
- Find the file, open its menu, and choose Open with Play Books or Upload to Play Books.
- Open Play Books → Library → Uploads to find your book.
If your device doesn't offer Play Books in the file menu, you can also upload the EPUB to your Play Books library from a computer. The "Enable PDF uploading" setting is needed for PDFs, not normally for EPUBs.
Official instructions: Google Play Books file uploads.
Desktop
Windows PC
Recommended app: calibre (free), an ebook library manager with a built-in reader.
- Download and install calibre from calibre's official website.
- Open calibre and click Add books.
- Select your downloaded EPUB file.
- Select the title in your library and click View to open the ebook reader.
Prefer to read in your browser? Google Play Books also lets you upload EPUBs from a computer and read them in a web browser.
Apple desktop
Mac
Recommended app: Apple Books, included with macOS.
- Download your EPUB to your Mac.
- Open the Books app.
- Select File → Import, find the EPUB, and click Import.
- Double-click the book in your library to start reading.
You can also drag an EPUB file into the Books app. See Apple's Books import instructions.
Common questions
Troubleshooting
Can I read offline?
Yes. Once the book has been downloaded into your reading app, you can generally read offline. Cloud uploads and syncing require internet access.
Why isn't the book appearing on my Kindle?
Make sure you sent the file through Send to Kindle, used the same Amazon account, and enabled Add to your library when available. Refresh your library while online and check personal documents. Processing isn't always instant.
My EPUB won't open. What should I check?
Verify the downloaded file ends in .epub and isn't an HTML page or an incomplete download. Download it again, then import it into one of the apps listed above. If your private download link expired, contact us for assistance.
Are these reading apps free?
Yes. Apple Books, Google Play Books, Amazon's Kindle app and Send to Kindle, and calibre are free to use for these steps. Some require an account.
Can I share my advance copy?
Please don't forward, upload, or redistribute personalized ARCs or their private download links. Friends can apply for their own advance copies.
